Sail

Sometimes I start to talk and trip

over my words and return for another attempt

but they slip away and I just laugh

it’s nothing important anyway

next time I’ll find them, the words

I’ll say what I mean and mean exactly what I say

and they’ll hear me and understand

no, the same thing happens again

I start to tell them what’s on my mind

but I lose a word and stumble

my heart stammers and I panic

picking up any words I can to fill the silence

never finding the ones I meant to say

if I could just step aboard a tiny sailboat

surrender to the tide and the winds

wander over the oceans in purposeful quiet

the water has no need for conversation

the waves hold no judgement of lost words

this is where I take my mind

when words fail me and fall about the ground

far beyond the land where there is peace

where the waves crash like cats purring

giving me the strength to turn back

for the land might be treacherous

and the people there unforgiving

but it is home, far from this sail boat

and one day the words will find me there.
