The Notorious

“What do you make of this one?” Roger asked. He nudged the body with his foot.

I leant over and looked into the girl’s glassy eyes. “The wounds are unmistakeable, it’s them,” I said.

Roger sighed and dragged the body through the sand. He pulled her up and over his shoulder, and asked “What are we on now?”

I flicked through my note book and scribbled down the name we found on her licence. “She’s the sixth,” I said.

“That we know of,” Roger added.

We walked to the car and Roger tossed her into the bloodstained boot. He wiped his brow and got into driver’s seat.

I rested my head back and closed my eyes. We had been collecting bodies for the past three weeks. With each new girl we found, the longer and harder the storms would rage.

“I don’t know how many more I can bury,” Roger said. “How do we stop them?”

“We reanimate her,” I said. “If that doesn’t bring them out nothing will.” I sat forward and looked across to Roger, “Let’s not waste any more time.”

He turned on the engine and we made our way to the bunker.

The girl looked peaceful. Once we had covered up her wounds you could have mistaken her for sleeping. Soon she would be awake again, and hopefully her scent would bring them to us.

I placed my hands on her chest and took a deep breath. Roger put his hands over mine and whispered a prayer.

“If you feel it slipping, stop,” he said.

“I’m bringing her back. If anything happens to me, you know what to do.”

“This isn’t worth your life,” he said. He pulled my hands away from her body. “We will find another way, I won’t lose you.”

“It’s the only option we have left. We brought them into this world, Roger, and I will die taking them out.”

There’s nothing better than a speed write to get the creative mind spinning. Who knew a daily prompt could create a world ending species? I’ll definitely be working with the Notorious again in the future, this was a fun one to write. Thanks for reading!

Daily prompt from The Daily Post: Notorious

Your Lies

Their lies become your lies

What you need, who you are

Everything they want you give to them

believing it to be for the best

receiving nothing in return

Time cements lies into values

and truth tellers become extremists

Harming others is second nature

you don’t need excuses

it’s just how it is now

their lies tell you it’s okay and you believe it

I stand up to tell you there is another way

but you mock me back down

their lies are your lies now

your lies are the only truth you hear

My truth is offensive

it threatens to crumble the mountain of lies

built up over years of manipulation

closing minds and slamming doors

their lies kill hope and freedom

but you believe it is better than the alternative

an alternative no one knows

yet everyone despises

How much longer can the world last

breathing in the lies that you inherited

suffering torture dressed as tradition

watching its children bleed and cry

how much longer will you live by your lies?

I’ll be working on this one, I think it deserves more time than a few minutes of speed writing. It has the potential to really hit upon a lot of what I’ve been trying to speak out for recently, so you might be seeing Your Lies again in the near future.

Daily prompt from The Daily Post: Farce

What Happens on the Ground

‘Falling’, he said, ‘we’re falling’

What a thing to say

Where from? How far?

But a tight nod sufficed

in response over words

‘You must see it too’

Not really, or do I?

Were we ever not falling

To where, despair?

I did not know

Again a nod with a small frown

Uncertain but wanting to hear

what he had to say

This fall of ours, where to?

Was it a dream fall?

The feeling of weightlessness

or a nightmare fall?

Clarity of the ground beneath

knowing it’s only a matter of time

We were falling, had been

but now, I thought not

Maybe he’s lagging,

there’s a glitch in time

‘It’s only a matter of time,’ he said

Time before what

‘Before we hit the ground’

That doesn’t sound pleasant

I don’t like mud

perhaps it’ll be concrete

I don’t like pain either

maybe flowers

Nor bugs

Maybe it’ll just be with a toe

then we’ll bounce back

if there is a back

Something will be there

or we’ll be stuck on the ground

Together, apart, falling

What a thing to say

we’re falling

We can’t fall

I don’t know what happens on the ground.

The Trouble with Being Human

Born into a bloodline with closed eyes

Hope and fear is turned into love when they open

You hold onto a parent’s hand with trust knowing that you can never fall

Their grasp keeps you smiling throughout those blind years with joy

Seen as naivety to the old who are quick to lose their hopeless love and joyless trust

They tell you that your childish reality was nothing but a dream

Your eyes open wide as the world expands to more than blood

Hands reach out to you offering you more, your hope and fear turn into love when you take them

You hold onto all that you can with trust locking away the fear that they might let you go

Stumbling every now and again is part of our design

Beware that some will use the marks left behind to loosen your hold

Their petty nooses will fall short of hanging you, drawing and quartering you

Language learnt from when eyes open, those innocent beginnings flow into dangerous waters

With turning tides that can be twisted and misheard, misplaced or misconstrued

Your words might betray you, whilst others use them to severe your grip

Fingers unclasp and hands fall away with only fear left to hold onto

Forgiveness can be found with that blind hopeless love found in your blood

Severed ties can be renewed with hope and joy once again

Let others be bitter whilst you run to your next adventure holding on tight

For your mind and your heart never stop growing, and that is the trouble with being human

For You

How can a love so strong exist?

My chest aches when I try to define it,

The world stops when I am beside you,

How can I put words to such a feeling?

Your eyes of innocence blind me,

Your gentle touch breaks every part of me,

Your beauty weakens me,

How is such purity possible in this devastating world?

To say I love you will never be enough,

To say you make this world a better place is too little,

You are my soul, my heart,

Without you, love would be but a word free from meaning,

You are love, and you are perfectly impossible.
